Still here...

Just in case you've all worried that I've fallen off the face of the earth (or been blown off it)

I am still here.

My work desk looks like this:

Our laptop has completely died a death - will be buying a new charger on Thursday!

All blogging is on hold (apart from this one) and I am sorry to everyone!

On a plus side, the girls are being very funny and Car this morning wanted to know why a  friend of mine, who has recently given birth had changed into a pussy cat (It's all to do with her name - some of you may get this!)

See you all on the other side

Pushing the limits ( how to cope with them tantrums!!)

They all warn you about the terrible twos but no one warned me about the terrors of turning three.

Car is well and truly pushing the limits these days (and not just mine either, Neb's and Bel's too!). I think its because she is trying to find her boundaries (which to be honest I thought we had set and she had understood!).

So, have you passed the tantrum stage, or are you still there, or getting there, any ideas?

With both girls, I've had to use different strategies for dealing with tantrums (Yes, its military planning here!)

Bel

Bel didn't really tantrum much - she was possibly the perfect first child, which obviously spoilt me when Car was born. (Yes,I do know that saying she is the 'perfect' child is tempting fate but I am touching wood and typing this!).
When she had done something wrong we could put her into time out on the naughty step and it worked. I also remember that when she looked as if a tantrum was brewing we'd distract her. I cannot be the only mum who has shouted "Aeroplane" while sat in a car 'sans' kids!

Car

When little miss butter wouldn't melt Cat starts well god help you. I've tried the naughty step and she will literally throw herself off it! And the noise, it doesn't half give you and possibly everyone else a headache!

So, what do I do.. well I've resorted to counting, 1....2.....3....4....5
I can on good days get to 2 and she will stop. But sometimes, even the counting doesn't help and then we do have to send her to her room or take something way.

Remember if you are dealing with a tantrum, here are my handy hints:

DISTRACTION - even the most inane objects can be used
NAUGHTY STEP - if your child is small, try and hold them but watch out you may be kicked, bitten etc...
COUNT -  slowly and calmly

Of course, if all else fails there is always the option of passing the children to your OH, taking a deep breath and heading for the nearest glass of white wine!!!

PS Please feel free to comment on how you deal with tantrums.

Moustaches and mayhem

When I read that this week's gallery theme was Mustachioed, I just knew what picture I wanted to use.

Last year, when we visitied Neb's brother in Winchester, Bel found his moustaches and hat and the result is this:

One mustachioed child, looking like she belongs in the 20s.

PS If you want to see more mustachioed characters then either visit the Gallery or you could check out the entries in the World Beard and Moustache Chanpionships (held in Norway on Sunday!)

Parental Pressure

I read today (during my lunch hour, the lap top is still misbehaving and Dell want £50 for a new charger!!)  that us parents are putting pressure on each other to spend, spend, spend when providing for our children.

The figure given in the article says that raising a child up to the age of 21 totals more than £210,000.

I am in shock, and the shock continues when I read further down.

The article continues with the fact that 30% of this is spent on baby and nursery goods - now I'm aware that there is always the" in pushchair/pram and buggy" but would I spend £1,200 on one - um no, I was lucky my dad bought ours and it was only about £150, and it was a travel system with car seat as part of  so I didn't shell out extra for car seat and the system has been fine for both girls.

The article notes that there is also a large demand these days for nursery furniture, something our girls have never had. The cot (which again has lasted both of them) is the only item of nursery furniture we had (which was bought my in-laws), the only other item we had was an old chest of drawers that I painted turquoise (it used to be in my room when a child)  and put Winnie The Pooh handles on it. Both girls also had WTP pictures (£1 each from charity shop), some glow in the dark stars and while being a tad creative Car has a picture of Peppa Pig on her wall (cost £2 for canvas!).

What is even more shocking is that 1/5 of all parents have bought a TV for their baby's room (yes that's right baby! or 0-4 as stated). A TV, really! I find that just disgraceful and so wrong - that just can't be me.

So what is driving this urge to spend, the expert quoted in the article says that many parents are living "actively through the way their children appear". But why, why do we need the feel to do this, are we pressurizing each other to do so.

If you are a parent to be, let me stress to you now, how important it is to get the big things from your family and friends. They will all want to help in some way and even  if its a hand me down* at least you know it has been cared for. Let them buy expensive gifts, let them share the burden.

I am lucky as many of the clothes and toys that my girls have are either presents or loved me downs (I think a better word than hand me down). Even now, with Bel getting older we have been lucky to get some really nice (and sometimes never worn) clothes. I don't feel that I need to live through my child and because of the way we try and live, they are not allowed to have everything they want. To enjoy time together, happily as a family surely is more important than spending money at an alarming rate.

There are somethings in my children's life which I will spend the money on, eg their education (lets all have fingers crossed that £9,000 fees may be scrapped by the time mine are old enough but designer goodies, spoiling them with money rather than love - Nah not me.

* BNM recommends that you shouldn't buy a second hand car seat

The French one

After posting some dodgy Welsh songs last week, I thought I'd prolong my sadness and let you into the other 'foreign' songs I like.

During my second and third year in comprehensive school, I partook in French exchanges. The first time I went it wasn't that successful and lest said the better  (it involved horses, wetting myself and screaming lobsters!) but the second time I went to a lovely family in Brittany (our school was twinned with a school in Brest) and the memories of my time there stay with me now. I got so close to her and her family that when we visited France as a family for the following two years we would go and see them. It is a shame that my French has worsened (or been forgotten) as I would love the chance to meet her again (if I could find her address!!)

My exchange students name was Helene and she had a thing for this next singer. I remember her giving me a copy of the tape (its probably in here) before I left that summer (along with several packets of the delicious chewing gum, Hollywood).

So to Helene, wherever you are, this is to our times together, to memories of drinking champagne, eating horse (or  beef who knows!) and to your grandpa flirting with my mum.

Blog fail

This is just a quick message to let you all know that I am still here but the power cord on our laptop has decided to die so at the moment I can't blog from home. Work is very busy so I can't do much from here either. I will try and keep up with everything and do some in my lunch hour but you know I got to eat. So, if you are a PR person and waiting for a review from me please be patient!! And if you want to know what I've been doing then you will have to hang on in there!!

Soreen - a tasty snack (REVIEW)

I do get to review some lovely things and Neb was very happy when a parcel of Soreen came winging its way through the door.

Soreen has added two new flavours to its fruit filled range and we were lucky enough to try the Apple and Sultana one and the Banana one.

Banana Soreen

Now this  was gorgeous, banana cake without the hard work of waiting for the bananas to blacken. We tired it first with butter and then without butter. As it contains less than 1.5% saturated fat its probably best to have it without but both taste as good.

Apple and Sultana Soreen

I had to leave the testing of this to everyone else as it has Sultanas in - but what did they think. Well they all loved it. Again another low in saturated fat loaf (less than 1.5%) and bursting with Apples.

So, overall what did Neb think - well he said that both loaves were great - especially if kids are hungry and need a healthy snack, but he does still prefer the original!

So, if you fancy a great tasting snack or energy boost at any time then the new additions to the Soreen fruit range is available at major supermarkets retailing for £1.29 (rrp)

We were sent two Soreen loaves to review. All opinions given in this review are mine or my families.

Meal Planning Child Style (with some help from Annabel's Kitchen)

I want a fruit n vegetabliser please. Or at least a knife which will stop me cutting my fingers off. (Note, don't panic this is why I have a husband!!)

I know your wondering what I'm on about. Well, we have recently been lucky enough to review the new Annabel Karmel book and after Bel reading it from cover to cover, I made sure that I recorded the series that went with it. The series Annabel's Kitchen is now showing on CITV. And, being the good mummy, I record it then we watch together. Annabel's Kitchen has a lot of fab gadgets (invented by Jimmy the penguin) that I think any busy mum would love to own - A fruit n vegetabliser which slices, dices, chops or squeezes any fruit or vegetable into whatever shape you'd like and a Cookatron which cooks things in seconds.

Bel enjoyed the first couple of programmes so much that this week all our evening meals have been planned by her from her 3 kids cookery books, The Annabel's Kitchen book, The Annabel's You can cook book  and a Cooking for Kids book.

So what have we eaten this week:

Monday - Baked Potato Souffles (bit like twice baked potatoes)
Tuesday - Tuna Pasta (one of the only meals demanded by Car)
Wednesday - Chicken Burgers (from Annabel's Kitchen)
Thursday - Salmon Burgers (adapted from Annabel's Kitchen)
Friday - Hidden Vegetable Bolognese (from Annabel's Kitchen).

All the meals so far has been a success, and even Car has eaten all of them.
Bel has loved being in charge both with helping to choose the food and helping to make it.

The book is laid out in funny chapters and follows Annabel and Jimmy (a penguin) cooking different items. Even though the programme is a big hit with Bel, Car will actually sit there and watch it, she thinks Jimmy is funny and the singing cupcakes make her laugh
Bel has even proclaimed that she would like to have Annabel's kitchen when she grows up, if she can go on the programme and know she wants to be a chef when she grows up (or a Explorer, Scientist or Astronaut!!).

So, if you fancy getting your child more into cooking then this is a good book. Letting Bel pick the menu this week means she has eaten every thing I have put in front of her!! The book is available from all good bookstores, rrp £12.99 and the programme is now showing on CITV at 3.30pm weekdays.

BNM

We were sent a free copy of the book to review. All opinions given in the review are mine, Bel and Car's with Neb giving a thumbs up to the food!!

Land of Song

I bet you've all heard that Wales is the Land of Song and for this week's Tracks of My Years I'm going to treat you to some of the Welsh songs of my Youth.

While growing up, I did listen to predominately English music but now and then I use to go to welsh gigs. We were very lucky round where I lived to not only get Cymdeithas Yr Iaith gigs in a nearby hotel but to also have a large folk festival (called Y Cnapan) nearby.

Unsuprisingly as its Welsh music - not much of it is on You Tube! I tried to hunt down Jess - the first band I saw at a gig, and was about to give up when I found this:

Then I found this, which was of Sobin a'r Smaeliad (aka Bryn Fon another one of my childhood crushes a la Shaky - yes the older man again!)

Now, that was the year I went to Cnapan and it being 1997 was actually allowed to stay over. I went with a couple of friends from university and all three of us managed to fit into a two man tent. We woke early the next morning and found that the two man tent next door to us held 7 people!

I don't know if I should own up to having any more Welsh music as have just realised that these are both a bit dodgy.

Ladybird + Land of Me NEWS

Do you remember back in February, I raved about the Land of Me (its here if you didn't see it!!).

The Land of Me is an interactive digital story book which even now still gets played in our house. Car when she sees me open the computer will still demand ammimals dancing mummy and both girls love the activities that I sent off for.

The Land of Me is in itself brilliant and cool (and all other fabulous words that I could use to describe it) but things have got even better for them because they are now partnered with Ladybird:

This is fantastic news and I know that The Land of Me are developing many new exciting products in conjunction with Ladybird in the months to come.

And because Land of Me are so lovely they are offering you the chance to share in their excitement at this good news with the following offer:

A discount on the Download / DVD Rom of The Land of Me- £20 instead of £29.95 all you need to do is enter the discount code - WELOVELADYBIRD - at the checkout in the shop  www.thelandofme.com/shop.

Fantastic or what - we (at the BNM household) would definitely recommend that you get this - especially with another half term looming!!

Simple things please simple minds

It was my first day back in work today, so you will forgive me if I jump on board the Listography band wagon (my brain is very addled already!) .

I love the idiom "simple things please simple minds" because I love simple small things - the silliest things make me smile ~ like seeing a dog with its head out of the car window and its tongue lolling out!!!

Anyway, here is my top 5:

1) Giving the kids water holders, bottles and spray bottles and letting them play in the sun with water. (This we did last week, but I was worried the camera would get soaked so didn't!!)

2) Car and Bel's hysterical laughter - guaranteed to turn a frown upside down!

3) A mummy hug, back hug, will not let you go hug (from one of the girls!)

4) Having a pint in the local pub (with or without the kids), there is something refreshing about pub cider!

5) Sunday morning lie ins (with a book)!

Tapes

Dear Bel and Car,

There is a box in the attic (one of many) that looks a bit like this:

To your eyes they look old and archaic, but to me they represent my youth, my times pre university and a few during university. You'll see if you read the labels that some are bought tapes (Hits 3,Jive Bunny and the master mixers, Shakin' Stevens) but most are handwritten copies (The Levellers, Sade, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Roxette etc). Some of them even hold recordings of past top 40 countdowns -in those days when I knew who was in the Top 10 and at number 1. These my girls are my tapes. I treasure them like an old friend, but with the tape deck in my room now dead (it ate a tape, sob!) their uses are starting to wean. I know that I should do something with them but how can I when they are me, my past. One of these days, I will get them out, make you listen to my past, listen to me sing and laugh at me dance!

But for now, I leave you this, a song to make you dance, a song for you to bounce along too:

To pee or not to ...

Yes, this is another one of those blog posts that may contain toilet humour (something that as a Mummy blogger one must do at some point or another, apparently!).

I've mentioned before (somewhere, try here or here) about Car and her need to pee in every loo we see now that she has conquered day time potty training (we're still working on night time -come back in a few days to hear more!).

Saturday, while shoe shopping for Bel (it seems that both her school shoes and her trainers were way too small and that she is now at 7 a 1 1/2!!) Car mentioned that she "need a wee mummy". Luckily as we were not that far away from one I walked her to it - leaving Neb and Bel to pay for shoes!

Now, having had the opportunity of visiting many loos with her, I am now able to answer most questions, normally about condom or tampon machines with ease, that is I say their Mummy or Daddy things and leave it at that. Yesterday though my normal answer wasn't enough for her - in the toilets they had above the toilet roll paper bags for disposing of tampons and other lady products with. She asked "What 's that Mummy"  and I gave her the normal answer but all I got was "What things?". So being a bit flustered, I repeated "things".

This little voice then piped up "Is it for when you pee your knickers mummy!"

BNM

PS I do not pee my knickers!!
