Pictures, I have many and what with both of us know having digital cameras our laptop is full of them. But that is where many stay, we tend to forget to pirnt them out (even with Neb having a printer dock for his). There is the odd time when we do of course, like the one I have of the girls in work!
So, to set things straight, I was lucky enough to review a photo book for Bonusprint. A photobook is a great way to save your memories and have them at hand.(and not have to scroll through thousands!). So, for Father's day , I thought I'd make a photo book for Neb.
I chose to do a landscape book and also chose to set the book up online (even though there is a creator tool you can download). I had already decided on a theme for the book, so I knew which pictures of the girls to pick. So, after a bit of fiddling (which I love doing), putting in some wording, choosing the background colour I sent off my order.
Now, as I had picked it for a Father's day present I ordered it on the Thursday before (9th June) and it arrived on the Friday (17th). Seeing as I was nervous that it would arrive on time, I kept track of the stages it was at through the personal tracking number (daily!) I had told Neb that something was coming but not what it was, so I used the excuse of wrapping it to check it out and its fantastic. It is a soft cover book with our photos, which made Neb cry. I will definately be doing something like this again - especially as Neb is 40 soon!
And Neb, well he loves it - its something I know he will treasure for years to come!
So, why let those pictures on your computer get forgotten, turn them into a happy treasure today!

I was given a code to review a Bonusprint PhotoBook. All opinions given in the review are my own.

The tooth saga
So, it got taken out.
( I would have taken a picture, but I am a wimp and the dentist thought I was odd enough when I asked if I could have my ipod in!)
So, you'd think the pain is over.
BUT apparently not...
I am still like this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bengigencer/3552839255/
So, I have spent most of my time since last Thursday in more pain. Not only, the pain of having a tooth out (and the not being able to eat anything unless its soft food, or drink anything unless its cold!) but no apparently (after another visit to the dentist yesterday) its not the hole. Oh, no the hole is healing, the pain is ANOTHER BLOODY TOOTH...
Just shoot me now please....

Another book bites the dust..
Back in January, I told you of my hopes and that I wanted to read more in general. Well, I have been reading lots recently. I've reread some more Pratchett books and am eagerly awaiting Snuff (which is due to be published on the 13th October!).
Last week though, on the Thursday (after my visit to the dentist-I'll tell you more later!) I popped in to the Oxfam book shop in town to buy the girls some more books. While I was there, I also got my self this one:

And do you know what, its fantastic. Best book, I have read in ages. I absolutely love it. It may even get added to my best book list (with Jane Eyre). Even though it was published in 1860, it read easily. And at the bargain price of 99p who can complain.
So, as this went well and with the lovely sunny weather we are having (which means I can sit out and read) I'm off today to buy some more books.
What are you reading this summer?

Hello Hell?
Its 5.55 and apparently its the new hell time for parents, that is according to an article in Tuesday's paper (well they said mothers but I know its not just the mothers who get it!)
So is 5.55 your hell time, I've been thinking about this (since not eating, drinking coffee or doing anything nice - Tooth gap hell here) and I don't know. I think for me the hell time is just after I finish work (be this 4/4.30) and I am sitting in the car on the way home or have got home and all I get is screams of "I'm Hungry" or "What's for Supper" or "Can I go outside and play?"
Husband actually agrees with me on this, because he tells me that Car will have behaved all day, then see me, then turn into monster! Bel (on the days I finish at 4.30 , Neb takes her home first, gets her change then meets me from work) seems to be the same too. I realise that they're excited to see me but sometimes it would be nice to get into car/get home and not have this madness!
So, what time is your hell time?

Tooth Hurty - so tooth out....

So, I went to my dentist (you know the one I don't like) and I sat there (with Car opposite me - she had demanded to come , which I guess meant I had to be brave).
And, well after an xray - it seems that the tooth which hurts needs to come out. Yep, you heard right - apparently its a wisdom tooth (which I could swear I've had out), and I need it extracted.
So, I'm on standby for an appointment and Neb (whose had several out) doesn't know why I am so petrified. But the thought of that needle and the noise, I may take my ipod with me and zone out!
Hopefully there won't be a cancellation anytime soon.....

Is it summer holidays yet?
This is a question that I get asked daily.
I'm glad that school breaks up (well round here) in 4 weeks. I don't think I could cope with the question for more than that!
And the reasons for the excitement:
Well we are going on a family holiday to a cottage in "ORKSHIRE*" at start of August. (Bel and Car both want to know whether ORKSHIRE* PUDDING will be eaten!). While on holiday, we have said that one day we will have a train ride to York to visit the Train museum (cue very excited girls and daddy!). If, anyone, knows of any great child friendly places to eat in York then let me know (otherwise it will be McD's). I am also looking forward to last day of holidays because I get to see RP, and we will all be having a sleep over. Yeah! (alcohol may be consumed!)
Then, Car and Bel will be going to see Grandma and Grandpa on their own for some of the holidays. Or, in Car's words to look after them. Car has even said that she won't be taking her dummy with her because Grandma won't like it. We will get to spend some child free days. WEY-HEY.
So, is it summer yet??

Tracks of my Years
This is not a track of my years but a track of your years - Car and Bel .
You sing it and although it grates me to hear it a hundred times a day, I smile and laugh.
Maybe a song, that I should add to my ipod so we can all dance while washing up

I like driving in my car
..'cept I can't!
You see him indoors as been nagging me about passing my driving test so then he could find a job and I could do the school run (go figure!).
But as I've pointed out to him, its not that simple. I have tried my testseveral a few times before (don't ask how many!) and I'm not that confident in the car - even less confident after being in the car crash when Car was small.
But then it got me thinking, maybe I should try my test again, get a car (maybe this one:
and then sort myself out some car insurance and drive off with the kids...(obviously I would come back!)
But its the cost (as usual) that is keeping me from not doing it and even with cheap car insurance it is still expensive.
And even with the costs, I still wonder, should I go ahead and take that plunge...

Tennis - the BNM version
So, when I finally got out of my drug haze yesterday, I saw that OH was watching Wimbledon.
Yes, the tennis has started - which means it'll probably rain for the next two weeks
Here are a few things I learnt while watching it yesterday (remember I was on drugs!!):
while watching Schiavone vs Dovic
Bel asked "which one do you want to win Daddy?"
I replied " the one with the big pointy nipples" (that'll be Dovic to you)
while watching Nadal vs Russell
me "why does he have circles on his Tshirt under his armpits?"
Neb "maybe they're his tickling zone!"
while watching Murray vs Gimeno Traver
me "why are they shouting FWAOR"
Neb " Its' FAULT you idiot"
Maybe I shouldn't watch the tennis.....

AWWWW
My tooth hurts.
I went to work today and then came home an hour later.
I have been in a co-codamol infused haze for most of the day. I'm sat here now with the pain starting to come back but I will be strong and not have any more until bed time!!
I have an emergency appointment tomorrow. I am scared. I used to like going to the dentist, hell, I even wanted to be one when I was applying for universities (but its OK because I never was a grade A student!).
The dentist I had from my childhood has retired - he was lovely. Now we have a Polish one , and I don't like her.
I'm so scared and it hurts.

Just a reminder
.. that it's Father's Day on Sunday.
Don't panic if you've forgotten you can still go and buy something and take it round to him. If you do need to post it though you may have to grovel on phone (or tell him the postmen are on strike, always worked for me!) and it will arrive late.
Did you know though that it was only in the mid 70's that Fathers' Day (yes that's the right way of writing it) was officially recognised and has been on the 3rd Sunday in June ever since!
I am this year (for once) organised and not only have I bought Neb's father a card, I have also managed to post my dad's card and present,as well as buy Neb's card from the girls and have various presents for him. (all of which he has no idea about (as usual! - but he did say earlier that he liked having the odd gifts!)
So, what's it like to be a dad and how to dad's cope with fatherhood.
Well luckily for you, I have managed to get an interview with author, blogger supreme and all round sport Tim Atkinson (also known to some of you as The Dotterel). Father-of-three Tim Atkinson is an award-winning UK parent-blogger and well-established author. His site: www.bringingupcharlie.co.uk is among the most popular parent blogs in the country and has featured in national press, on radio and television as well as winning several national awards. Having spent a wonderful sabbatical as a stay-at-home dad with his three-year-old son, Charlie, he is passionate about helping other dads make the most of the vital early months and years with their children.
So questions, well either everyone on Twitter know you to well (I did Tweet asking for questions the other day) or they're all to shy. So, sit down, relax (tea and biscuits over there) and lets see what questions I have managed to think of!
Firstly, thank you for opening up to me here, I would put you on a sofa but as your a part time Psychology teacher I'm a bit scared -
1) For people who don't know who you are, how long have you been blogging for?
Three years in total - not quite long enough to be an old hand but too long to be the new kid on the blog.
2) What does your wife think of your notoriety as a parent blogger (actually big thanks to Daddacool for that one!)
She likes the freebies we sometimes get - sorry, the essential parent products that we're asked to review! And I think she tolerates my notoriety. In fact, she does more - she often suggests things I should blog about or tells me 'you must put that on the blog' when Charlie says or does something funny or outrageous. Someone did once ask (apropos Cybermummy last year) whether she minded her husband being the only man among so many yummy mummies, but she's used to that. By which I mean, I've been lone male on the school run for years.
3) As a daddy blogger, and published author of the new book - Fatherhood, the Essential Guide, do you believe that more dads are turning to the Internet/blogging/books now to find out baby things than before?
Well, that's what I did. That's how I discovered 'mummy' blogging. I think it's what blokes do. The baby won't stop crying or there's some other problem and you google it. I did, and fell into the rabbit hole of parent blogging. I'm happy here.
4) How does Charlie feel about his fame? Will he sign autographs?
5) Did you learn anything from your dad on being a Dad?
Of course, although precisely what it is I'd be hard pushed to define. I'm not the same kind of dad as my dad to be sure. But he always tried to give me - and my sister - time. I remember once being desperate to play cricket one evening and persuading him to come out to the nearest field and let me bowl at him. Unbeknown to us the local farmer had put some cows out to pasture. Well, they didn't bother us but I'd hardly bowled an over when the ball hit a fresh cow-pat smack bang in the middle, showering my dad with dung. He just laughed! I'm not sure - after a hard day at work - I'd be quite as quick to see the funny side as he was!
6) What one thing do you hope Charlie will learn from you as a Dad?
7) What's your favourite party game (this question is from Bel!)
Anything that allows you to consume alcohol as either forfeit or reward. And preferably both.
(Note, Bel did say that she hoped Tim would also like musical statues her favourite!)
8) Daddy or Chips?
It seems that the interviewer went a bit mad with this quesiton and completetly confused Tim- I think she meant would Charlie say Daddy or Chips (click the question for the explanation...!)
9) What's your favourite colour? (this is from Car!)
Blue. And living in Lincolnshire, we get a lot of it - huge skies, and the same average annual rainfall as Algeria (although they get theirs all on the same day). Never really understood why Lincolnshire's county colour is green. Those skies are our landscapes.
(Car approve of this as her favourite colour is blue!)
10) and finally what song is your favourite to sing/ dad dance to?
Will that do? And as for the sofa, you're safe - we psychos don't use them anymore!
A big thanks to Tim for answering all the questions.
Fatherhood, the Essential Guide is available to buy from Need2Know books and from Amazon and is a must have for any new dad out there.
Luckily though, Tim has kindly given me a copy of the book and I have one to giveaway. So its competition time.....

He likes watching himself in the videos I sometimes post, but that's the only interest he takes. He can now write his name though, so autographs are bound to follow.
5) Did you learn anything from your dad on being a Dad?
Of course, although precisely what it is I'd be hard pushed to define. I'm not the same kind of dad as my dad to be sure. But he always tried to give me - and my sister - time. 6) What one thing do you hope Charlie will learn from you as a Dad?
Gosh, that's hard. Can I say what I hope he doesn't learn? Because I hope he doesn't learn from me how grumpy dads can sometimes be. On the other hand, I hope he learns the importance of being polite, sharing things (including time) and enjoying simple pleasures. You should see what we've made with a few pipe-cleaners while it's been raining this afternoon.

Something slow, so Sarah and I can smooch. I do like a good smooch. Although I also - so I'm told - do quite a mean Macharena, although I'm never sober enough to remember.

from the mouths of babes....
I thought I'd share with you today, what happened when me and Neb were preparing supper the other night and had a bit of smooch:

Image: Ambro / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Car stomps into kitchen, stops and says " Oh my god, that is disguising, I so don't want to see that" then stomps out again. We just burst into laughter. Since when did my 3yo become a teenager.

Tracks of my years - songs my mother sang 1
The song that I'm sharing with you this week is a song that reminds me of family holidays. This is the song that always makes me smile. The song that I still sing now, much to my kids amusement when I see this sign:

There is a post inside of me
I'd like to write after watching tv
A post about our right to pick
To live or die if we are sick
BNM June 2011
I guess many of you didn't watch the programme on telly last night with Terry Pratchett in it. I guess many shied away from watching it because it showed a man's final moments. I, though, did watch it. And to be honest, I felt for both the men who chose assisted suicide. They both knew, I think what pain they would suffer if they let their illness progress. In a way, mum decided to choose not to live when she turned down chemotherapy when the cancer came back.
In this country assisted suicide is illegal but suicide has not been illegal since 1961. I don't know whether I could do either but I think everyone should have the choice. It is not easy for the family left behind when someone dies of natural causes and when someone takes their own life then it is a struggle to comprehend. But, if you knew that person had chosen to die, had chosen to be helped to end the pain and were happy to leave this life, maybe the struggle would be less.
We wouldn't put an animal through unneccesary pain, we would chose to euthanasia it, yet humans have to suffer pain. I think that the programme opened up a taboo which know should be discussed more.
We all have rights, let one of them be the right to choose how we live our own lives, what we write and whether we choose to die with dignity.

I was lucky recently to be able to review a card from the Dog's Doodahs. The Dog's Doodahs are the new online card site with wet yourself funny cards. Luckily for me I had just missed my friend's birthday so after a lot of laughing, giggling I found her a card:
and then designed the inside:
and then sent it. All in all very easy
And the feedback from my friend well:
"It was really nice, have to say that having a personalized one is very cool & makes a nice change!"
Unfortunately though she did find a spelling mistake in it which to be honest, annoyed her and me. As I would with a normal card after our names I added xxx's which came out as ss. As she pointed out, " if you were using them for a special occasion like a wedding then it wouldn't be good or something you would want, especially having made the extra effort to do something personal and different".
All in all though, the specialness of having a card personalised and delivered, raised a smile and made her happy.

The Lie In
I know you all think that I'm obviously dreaming this occurrence because I can hear you think hasn't she got a 7yo and a 3 yo but let me explain:
Sometime, on a good day (ie a weekend) this happens. It is the stuff of myths and legends and will only happen when the blue moon rises against the red sun*.
I awake to the sound of tiny footsteps running and then scrambling into my bed. I peer at the clock and it says 9.30am . Next, the pound of a cat as it hits the bed. Then, silently another child creeps in to the room and onto the bed. Room is beginning to be at a premium and then the last cat saunters in and climbs on to my head. So, the lie in has emerged to be a pile on. I am squished and squeezed and damned nearly falling off the bed. This is what lie ins have become, not the lie ins of my youth and student years (where it was common to be in bed past 2pm!) but now the lie ins of a mother who knows that the real reason ones furred and child folk are here ....
BREAKFAST!!!

Date Night
(Before I start this post, I have a confession to make - this was meant to be part of the Mystery blog swap over at The Sardine Tin, but life and dead laptop prevented this from being done. So, a huge sorry to everyone!!)
------------
------------
So, being skint all the damned time, or tired, or ill, or having lack of babysitters we don't tend to go out together as a couple very often. I can't honestly tell you when we went out, just me and Neb on our own.
But what we tend to do, at least once a month is have a date night. So, here are some of my do's and dont's for date night (and also what really happens!)
Do: make sure that you have completely knackered your children out before they go to bed. This may involve running so make sure that if you are tired to have a shower or wake me up wash before date night begins.(this is not a fail safe method, it is normal that when you are sat down for romantic evening, one or both children will wake up at some point in the night, maybe more than once, children may at some point decide to have the vomits and spoil any mood by vomiting everywhere)
Do: buy wine (or cheap cider), nibbles and have a nice meal (or as normally happens, eat scraps off kids plates, miss supper, drink copious amounts of wine, have lots of laughs and chats, no supper and fall into bed/each others arms drunk!!)
Do: decide prior to the evening what film you are going to watch, we tend to get something off Sky Box Office (try and make it a film suitable for both of you, otherwise I will get bored and will fall asleep)
Do: have the date night on a Saturday night (otherwise wifey (me) will fall asleep on sofa, dribbling!)
Don't : let husband answer his mobile/house phone as it will be one of the boys asking if he fancies a night out, he will normally say yes and then any chance of smooching will disappear out the window.
Don't: run out of alcohol, or drink too fast, arguments may follow.....
And that's it folks, that's my date night do's and dont's. If you have any to add, please leave them in the comments below

What a week...
Hello, sorry I came back and then disappeared again....
Well what a week that was...
I've gone from nausea and doctors appointments to thinking I was pregnant (I'm not everyone!), to not eating (due to feeling sick), to it coming out the other end (I could be more to the point if you want!!), to sleeping (lots!!), to stopping smoking (5 days now YEAH!! - and yes, I had given up before but this time it is it!!), to losing half my tooth!!!
Obviously, as work is very busy, I have been in work through all of this. I have managed to get on top of the work now and next week should now be fine (*crosses fingers*)
Anyway, I'm back (again!)

The bane of my life
The bane of my life is the hair on the heads of Bel and Car.
I will put my hands up now and confess that I am crap at doing hair.
I have thick hair which will do what it wants - and to be honest even if it doesn't I tend to put it in a loose bun type thing (you know, low ponytail, turned round and then tucked in....don't know, don't ask, its what I've always done.) I used to have mega curly hair which as my hair has grown as changed to wavy hair. It has been straightened once (by the hairdressers). I would say, I don't own a pair of hair straighteners but I do and I've never used them (to Neb's annoyance seeing as their a Christmas present!).
Anyway, as usual, I digress...
The girls both have fine hair. Which obviously to be presentable has to be brushed every morning. And have a parting.
I can do the brushing - just.. the girls hate me doing it as they're both full of tangles in the morning. Tomorrow should hopefully be different, thanks to the tweet for help that I sent out earlier:
So, I have some Princess spray - and I am ready for hair brushing.
There is just one more thing.... how do I do partings?

The clubbing era.
I haven't done a tracks of my years for a while now so here is my recent one.
When I was at Uni, I used to have a random selection in music. Mondays was Nation night, Thursdays was Krazyhouse and Fridays was Mardi Gras, so I was a club/rock/indie chick. Oh and then of course there was the grab a ... night at the Union (I can't remember what it was called and I never did that bad!)
But one of the best nights out that sticks in my brain now is seeing Josh Wink play a set live in Voodoo @ Le Bateau (which according to google was 17th February 1996!). Now, I wasn't one for big nights like Cream @Nation but for some reason I went to this. This is one of the songs from the techno era that I still love and will still listen to it. So here you are, have a dance:

I missed this
Truth be told, I'm very happy that we are now back online. I've missed being able to sit here (while Neb is out or asleep) and release the words. I know that most of the time I talk crap, but its nice not having to do it alone. Its great to know that even when you are all busy too, you come along and visit me (even if you don't comment - but then I almost always forget to comment too!)
I've been blogging now for 2 years and I think that the time I've spent blogging has done me good. I've had many ups and many downs throughout my time here and I love it.
So thank god for little mercies that have kept me sane!!

Lucky us
We are so lucky were we live. 20 minutes from our house and we are in countryside like this:
We do try and take the kids out to enjoy the countryside as often as possible. Bel even has her own pair of binoculars that she got as a birthday present. We do love to spot things when we're out and about. Last week, on a trip to the local sand dunes we spotted loads of caterpillars, butterflies and a lizard. This week on our walk we spotted several birds, squirrels and a frog. We would obviously have spotted more but due to Car and her lack of volume control we do have an issue with this. I apologise to anyone yesterday who was out and about hoping to see many nesting birds for my daughters loudness. We try and give her a job when we're out and about, yesterday it was finding the red arrows, which she could only do at very loud volume. Neb and Bel at one point spotted a snake, but by the time me and the noisy one (Car) got back to it - it had gone (which I'm quite glad for !!).

PS You too can enjoy our lovely countryside, if you tune into Springwatch (go here to see what we didn't!)

Quack, Quack, Moo - a REVIEW and COMPETITION
Quack, Quack, Moo was set up by a frustrated mum who found some of the big brand products unusable and substandard and so decided to design her own products. Luckily for me, she has designed some unique products which use ground breaking technology called Dribble Bubbs - a triple layered waterproof protection system.
As you all know, Car is currently in the midst of night time training in our house so the protector gift set which I was sent was just right:
The Protector Gift Set contains a bed protector and a seat protector. Both use the Dribble Bubbs Technology.
With the nights getting warmer, the bed protector is genius. No more sweaty plastic sheets for us, no more waking up Car up to completely change the bed as it goes over the bed sheets and is easy to take off. It meant that when she had an accident (of which there are still plenty) I could go in, quickly change her, then take the sheet away. As its made out of Organic Bamboo Cotton it is naturally anti bacterial and is super absorbent which means no wetness to deal with. The only issue I had with the protector is the lack of instructions with the pack (I had a blonde moment) but after a quick email to the company, instructions were provided.
The other item in the gift set is the Seat Protector. Now I was unsure if this item would be suitable for us, as Car is day trained but actually the coolness of the protector helps her on sticky days and she especially loves that it has pockets for her juice and teddy! I know that when next she is ill, I can stick her on this in the car, sofa or chair and no that she and my furnishings are safe! We love, love , love the cow print design in our house.
The other item sent to us was the Buggy Strap and as both my girls now that hands need to be held, I passed it on to a friend. She loved the idea and her little boy, who despises reins is getting used to it too.
All Quack, Quack, Moo products are machine washable and suitable for tumble drying and are eco-friendly, environmentally sourced and made in the UK.
Now, COMPETITION TIME: How would you like to win a seat protector for your child? You can choose either the girl or boy version.
