Reading Eggs - Review

Recently we had issues with Car and school, we then realised it was because some children were getting books to read and she wasn't. We knew she wasn't quite at the place where she could start reading so off I went to buy a book for her- and though she got some of the letters it didn't keep her interested.

I then got an email from Reading Eggs- an on line reading programme

Reading Eggs is an on line programme that teaches children to read and which engages them  with great on line reading games and activities.

Both Bel and Car joined the scheme and both have found it marvellous

Car's Reading Eggs Journey

As Car knew some letters but was having trouble putting them together we thought the best place to start was not the playroom but with the actual programme. The first thing that happens is that your child is tested and Car started her journey half way through map 2. And Car's reaction, well apart from the "EPIC" and "COOL" we got a very happy child. She loves the games, the singing and is now demanding that she has spelling tests like Bel every night. She has recently completed the map and what I liked is the fact that I got sent an email with her progress on it (progress can also be checked through the main page)

Her reading has also come along in leaps and bounds and we had one very excited child that came home a week before half term with a reading book. When you learn with Reading Eggs, with every correct answer you get a golden Egg.The Eggs can be used to buy games, change your avatar (an egg creature), decorate your house etc. As well as the lessons there is a playroom where games can be played and we've learnt its a great way to finish off a lesson with Car.

The only issue I have with the programme is that some of the words recently are American.
When we played yesterday we got a picture of to me a waistcoat but to the programme a vest. It was hard to get Car to match it up with the picture so maybe a niggle that can be sorted.

Bel's Reading Eggsplorer Journey

Bel loves reading and she has a reading age of a 12 year old so I wasn't sure how much she'd benefit from the programme. She also loves it and her grammar and comprehension has improved. We also ensure that she gets time on Eggs every night and were astounded the other night when Car joined in with the Memory Game that Bel was playing - getting more right than her older sister.
As with Reading Eggs, Bel also gains eggs which she can use for the same purposes. The Eggsplorer journey is based on a planet and  the avatar are more humanoid but the concept is the same.

So a definite big thumbs up from the BNM family - Neb is astounded at the difference it has made to Car's reading and wanted to do the Comprehension on the Eggsplorer site himself!

Now as I was lucky enough to get given an extended free trial of Reading Eggs (for the purpose of this review), it would be a shame if couldn't experience it too - so if you want to have a go add the code  UKB24MBT to the promo code box and you too will get a 5 week trial instead of the usual 2 weeks.
