Ice stops school

I was really happy to hear this morning whilst watching the news that most schools in the UK were re-opening after the cold snap we've had.

You can imagine my surprise and the swear words said under my breath (honest) when I then heard on the local radio station that Bel's school was closed. Neb, who was up(!) shouted upstairs at Bel to change out of her school uniform and into something warmer and she was nearly in tears when she came downstairs.

I later learnt thanks to FB that school is closed due to ice at top of hill. Now I know they have to be careful with small children but its getting silly now - Bel (and Neb) is going stir crazy. I've asked for them to tidy house for mummy today but heaven knows if this happens.

  1. Oh god - I know. Thankfully the kids were back at school today but they have been driving me bloody crazy. That said I did nearly skid into various cars on the school run today - but never mind. I was prepared to do anything to get them out of the house.

  2. How long is that now?
Surely there's only so much sledging/snowman building/snowballing kids can take!

  3. My SIl and I were just discussing this the other day- schools close if there is a tiny flake in the air. We used to go to school in all kinds of snow, but often we did get sent hom early. I'm thinking it all has to do with liability. Anyway, popped over to catch up on your posts... our house is cold too. We live in Maine (top of the east coast). Our hous is big and drafty, and we couldn't get the heat regulated. The stupid digital thermostats- all 5 of them- were all different and no instructions anywhere. Finally hubby changed out 3 of them, and we seem to be better. But we're blowing through major amounts of oil and money. UGH. I am so SICK of being cold. I wear a shirt, a fleece, and a wool sweater- inside!! We need a wood stove!

  4. Still you have to giggle a bit, when they cannot ever get it correct on the Salt. They have just put on order enough of the stuff to pickle everyone and they have to bet that next year we will have the same, for otherwise they would be better off to dump the stuff back into the Sea as storing it for two years will cost a fortune.
In a very few years the almost tears on the Kid will change for she -poor thing- will hate school soon enough.

  5. Kate - lucky you with kids back in school but try not to kill yourself today taking them in.

Make do Mum - sorry did you say sledging on 1/2 inch because thats all we've had

Lee - I hope you get warmer soon, its very warm here now but I have a cold and no voice

Vince - the salt thing is really silly and seeing as I live next to the sea you'd think they could just use sand instead!

Hopefully she'll be in today as heard that some parents had been clearing the ice.. fingers crossed!
