Doctor,Doctor

As some of you know I'm feeling not myself (fnar fnar!!) and have been overtired of late.

But all is OK, wellish - I have been to the doctor and short of checking my iron level with a blood test all is not lost. I am not dying (hurrah!) or pregnant ( you can think funny things when feeling vommitty and tired !!) but instead I have acid reflux probaly due to stress.

So, I'm STRESSED am I - no doctor, of course not  I'm not overdoing anything - not working from 8-4.30 (not to mention getting up at 6 with Car, cleaning (well not much of this!), washing, cooking, sorting out kids putting them to bed, and then collapsing in front of telly and falling asleep (poor Neb!)!!!

So yeah, I know have to slurp gaviscon - yucky horrible chalky stuff when feeling like my food is sat in my stomach and making me vomit...

I need to destress, does anybody have a gun I can borrow to shoot the students (joke!!) or have any other ideas what I can do to avoid slurping gaviscon!!!

  1. My suggestion would be not to eat for a couple of hours prior to sleeping. Also, to sleep with several pillows to elevate your head. Hubby has a hyatel (I know that's not spelled right) hernia which causes horrible acid reflux and these were suggestions his doctor gave him.

  2. I tend to get acid reflux (usually in the form of horrible acid heartburn) and have gone through the Gaviscon-slugging stage too. It's true, it does help, but to be honest I really don;t like the idea of taking any kind of medicine one or more times every day it I can help it. So I decided to check out other options. Here's what I have found helps me.

    1) Surprisingly enough, apple seems to help. Either cut cut into pieces and calmly and slowly nibbled through or (even gentler) in compote form (gently stewed), but cool not hot.

    2) Avoid eating or drinking anything in a rush.

    3) Identify the foods which seem to aggravate it. In my case, it seems to be bread, biscuits, cakes, etc. It's agony avoiding them as they really are my faves but it seems there is something in them (the flour perhaps?) that bothers me.
Other people find that fried food, dairy poducts or vinegar-based stuff like pickles affects them. It's just a matter of cutting each suspect group out and seeing if it makes a difference.

Hope this helps - good luck and let us know how you get on.

  3. i used to get acid reflux when I was pregnant. I had heard that drinking a glass of cold milk helped. I don't like it but gave it a go anyway (can't e as bad as that horrile chalk stuff!) and it worked. Hope it helps!

  4. O - I know the stomach problems in times of stress. Poor you! That's horrible.

I, too, vomit when confronted with Gaviscon, which I was prescribed during my first pregnancy. I spent about seven months with horrible horrible heartburn and no remedy. (I asked my doctor and my pharmacist, and neither had an alternative. The idiots!)

And then! And then! I was pregnant again and my chemist said very casually that I could have Maalox tablets instead! Which was my saving.

So - I hope this will work for you as well. Go get yourself a family pack of Maalox tablets and get munching!

  5. Many people say peppermint helps but it doesnt it aggrevates it, so try and avoid minty stuff as well. They say you should not eat for at least 3 hours before bed. If it contunes go to the doctor and ask him to advise you on an over the counter rememdy such as a proton pump inhibitor. Get your science had on again, the acid is being caused by over active acid pumps, the PPI will stop them producing so much acid and something like Zantac might help or a different thing like ranitidine, which works in a slightly different way. Gaviscon is the first line of things to try, but if it doesnt work or you cant tolerate it, there are other options. Maalox as mentioned by Mwa is an antacid, similar to Gaviscon just a different brand and formulation.
