Frugal Fun 1 - forest walks

Sometimes its hard being the only earner and stretching the wage to meet the end of the month but with a small bit of petrol in the car you can have lots of family fun. Like the fun we had last week after returning from our pilgrimage to the in-laws over Easter. And what did we do? Well we did one of our favourite things and take a walk in the outdoors.

Walking can sometimes be boring for the kids. Both Bel and Car have been known to exclaim "not trees again mummy!" but if you make it fun then it turns out to be " a fab adventure mummy"

So, before heading out on a Magical Mystery Tour, I make sure I've packed some lunch or snacks. Recently the girls have been drinking lots of squash - lemon and lime is the in flavour in our house at the moment. So, instead of spending money on juices, I tend to keep empty plastic bottles and fill with squash. Then, grab some other goodies: sandwiches, crisps, tomatoes, strawberries and bag is ready to go.

One great place I've found of taking the kids is to the local Forestry Commission Woodlands. If you pop onto their websites, you can see which places have trails. Even though many have visitor centres, we are quite happy to go off the beaten track and find the smaller ones.

With the trails, easy and moderate are the best for the kids and me! The other day we did an hour walk with a moderate climb of 400m- the kids ran up and I slowly walked it. The trails also have signs for the kids to follow on the way round- just make sure you know what colour you are following!

We have found lots of lovely walks which we know we'll return to time and time again this way!

I'm hoping to do some more frugal fun adventures over the coming weeks before the summer holidays. So if you have any ideas then please let us know and we'll see if we can do them!
